Ngũgĩ wa Thiongʼo’s political masterpiece, Devil on the Cross (1980), is a foundational prose text frequently studied in Uganda's UNEB A-Level Literature in English (Paper 1: Prose). Famously composed on rolls of toilet paper while Ngũgĩ was detained without trial in a Kenyan maximum-security prison, the novel utilizes magical realism, biblical satire, and traditional Gĩkũyũ oral storytelling (Gĩcaandĩ) to deliver a scathing Marxist critique of neocolonialism, international capitalism, and the systemic exploitation of women in post-independence Africa.
