Daniel Mengara’s debut novel, Mema (2003), is a celebrated text in Uganda's UNEB A-Level Literature in English (Paper 1: Prose). Set in a rural Gabonese village, the title itself translates from the Fang language to mean "My Mother". Rather than focusing on a traditional anti-colonial struggle, the book offers a deep, internal exploration of African society, tracking the severe clash between communal patriarchal traditions and individual resilience. The story is told retrospectively through the first-person narration of Mema’s son, who uses traditional oral storytelling structures to construct a complex portrait of his fierce, uncompromising mother.
