Victor Byabamazima’s realist novel, Shadows of Time (1999), is a prominent prose text examined under the Ugandan Curriculum (UNEB). Set against the backdrop of Uganda’s turbulent, politically unstable late-20th century, the novel acts as a fierce, poignant commentary on the systemic exploitation of women, the decay of moral values, and the vulnerabilities of youth in a patriarchal, highly corrupt society. Structurally, the narrative is delivered through a haunting autobiographical frame. It begins at the absolute end, where an executioner grants the 18-year-old female protagonist a final word before her execution for treason—making the entire novel her retrospective life story.
