Mongo Beti’s satirical novel, The Poor Christ of Bomba (1956), is a key text for Uganda's UNEB A-Level Literature in English (Paper 1: Prose). Set in 1930s colonial Cameroon under French administration, the book provides a scathing critique of the psychological effects of colonial assimilation, religious hypocrisy, and the intentional erosion of African traditional structures by European missionaries. Structurally, the novel is uniquely presented as a first-person diary kept by a naive, fiercely loyal 15-year-old African houseboy, Denis. This narrative technique creates a rich layer of dramatic irony: Denis records events with blind devotion, completely unaware that the details he documents expose the moral bankruptcy and systemic failures of his master's church.
